Un asceta dell’India tra le metope del Duomo di Modena: un’ipotesi interpretativa

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Il presente contributo analizza una delle otto sculture del Duomo di Modena conosciute come metope, datate alla prima metà del secolo XII e collocate originariamente all’esterno del Duomo di Modena. L’immagine scolpita presenta una figura umana maschile dai lunghi baffi appuntiti caratterizzata da alcuni elementi tipicamente ascetici, dati soprattutto da barba e capelli lunghi, e da un’insolita postura del corpo che ricorda un possibile āsana dello yoga. Grazie a queste sue peculiari caratteristiche – oggetto della presente analisi – l’immagine è qui interpretata come una raffigurazione di un asceta dell’India: una delle meraviglie dell’Oriente tipiche dell’immaginario medievale. Nel contesto tematico dato dall’insieme delle metope, questo particolare soggetto risulta inserito in un insieme di figure insolite riunite a comporre un’antologia figurativa del meraviglioso in cui il fantastico e l’esotico si mescolarono sino a confondersi.

ABSTRACT: This contribution analyses one of the eight sculptures from Modena Cathedral known as “Metopes”, dated to the first half of the 12th century and originally placed on the exterior of the Cathedral. The sculpted image presents a male human figure with a long pointed moustache characterised by some typically ascetic elements, especially his beard and long hair, and by an unusual body posture reminiscent of a possible yoga āsana. Thanks to these peculiar features – the subject of the present analysis – the image is here interpreted as a depiction of an ascetic from India: one of the wonders of the Orient typical of the medieval imagination. In the thematic context given by the set of the Metopes, this particular subject is included in a series of unusual figures brought together to compose a figurative anthology of the marvellous in which the fantastic and the exotic mingle to the point of confusion.
