Una «riconsiderazione» del San Benedetto e la Regula del Museo Civico d’Arte di Modena

Abstract

ABSTRACT: La scultura rappresentante San Benedetto e la Regula conservata nel Museo Civico d’Arte di Modena non ha goduto di fortuna critica. Il contributo intende rivalutare la statua attraverso una rilettura formale nel contesto della cultura figurativa della Valle del Po successiva a Nicolò e nel contesto di una riflessione attorno ai tempi delle botteghe postnicoliane tra novità del maestro e innovazioni plastiche protogotiche di area francese. Un inedito confronto formale del San Benedetto e la Regula offre infine lo spunto per una nuova ipotesi cronologica di un altro pezzo che ha goduto di grande considerazione critica da circa un secolo.

ABSTRACT: The sculpture depinting Saint Benedict and the Regula kept in the Modena’s Museo Civico d’Arte did not enjoy critical fortune. The essay intends to re-evaluate the statue through a formal reinterpretation in the context of the figurative culture of the Po Valley after Nicolò and in the context of a reflection around the times of post-Nicolòne workshops between novelty of the master and protogothic plastic innovations of French area. A new formal comparison of the San Benedetto and the Regula finally offers the starting point for a new chronological hypothesis of another piece that has enjoyed great critical consideration for about a century.
