Una nota sull’inglese antico āglǣca: mostri e magia nella poesia anglosassone

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Per la pluralità dei referenti e per la relativa opacità dell’etimologia, il sostantivo antico inglese āglǣca è stato indagato da diverse prospettive. Nella presente nota, riprendendo un’ipotesi già proposta da Huffines e applicata alle occorrenze del Beowulf, si valuta se un’ascrizione al lessico della magia possa essere plausibile, analizzando il peculiare uso di āglǣca nell’Andreas.

ABSTRACT: The Old English term āglǣca has been studied from various perspectives, considering its plurality of referents as well as its relative etymological obscurity. Starting from the hypothesis proposed by Huffines concerning the occurrences of the word in Beowulf, this note aims to evaluate whether āglǣca could be ascribed to the vocabulary of magic, considering especially its peculiar use in the poem Andreas.
